Interesting Careers in Science

Biologists from the Field Museum are studying biodiversity in the Amazon, a tropical jungle. If you were a field biologist, which biome would you study and why?

"Life is tough for tropical mammalogists. They work on a group with a limited number of species, maybe 150 at places like the ones we are in, and most of those species are bats and rats. Other than monkeys, most of the large mammals in the Amazon are rare. To detect them, mammalogists look for signs — scat, tracks, scratch marks, anything to let them know that a species is here. Worse, they have yahoo ornithologists reporting weird bats, and clueless botanists seeing rare deer. But they have to follow up on these reports. They also have to work night and day. Some mammals (monkeys, for example) are out in daylight hours, but for most, nighttime is when they are active."

  1. There will always be tough times regardless. i think it is very interesting how mammalogists detect all sorts of mammals by their scat, tracks, scratch marks ... I myself, will be unable to figure out what an animal is just by their poop or scratch marks. Some people just have that ability to determine certain types of animals by just doing so. It has its downsides as well. It must be alot of work to be able to do such things for example ornithologists. They report weird bats and the process on folloowing up on those reports.

  2. I think that if I were a field biologist I would also like to study the tropical rain forest. It is a place filled with many species that, still, scientists haven't been able to discover. Because of this, I think that analyzing and reporting on the different species in this biome would be easily done. On top of that, it has an undeniably beautiful landscape that would make the experience more enjoyable.

  3. I agree with you susan, and I know that if i were a field biologist; i would be out in the tundra. Being able to gather data at those extreme environments would just excite me. I feel that most people wouldn't venture out into those regions and i would love to be someone to pursue those limits.

  4. In todays global situation more and more species are becoming rare and endangered due to habitat loss and climate change. The fact that these mammalogists are so dedicated to tracking down and locating these species in order to make sure they do not leave this planet for good is very inspiring. I find it very interesting on how these mammalogists are able to track these animals and how they can determine which ones are endangered.

  5. I would really like to study to become a field biologist because visiting and learning about the environment of different animal speices and how they adapt to their surrounding sounds really interesting and I find it as a good way to explore places I've never been too.

  6. If I were a field biologist, I would study and do research in mountaneous regions with lakes because the animals in this type environment interest me. I also think there would be many different habitats to learn about there.

If I were to ever become a biologist, I believe I would study the marine life. It fascinates me of the type of plants and sea creaures that live in the ocean. I would want to have a part in helping and conserving the habitat of those creatures.

  8. The marine life would interest me if i would ever become a field biologist. This interests me because i love the water, and the diversity in the ocean is so immense that i would always be busy. Just being with sea creatures and interacting with them would keep my curiosity and love for aquatic life going. Also i would like to do my part by keeping the environment clean so i would definitly start with the ocean: less pollution in the ocean and more animal awarness.

  9. If I were to become a field biologist, the biome i would study is ocean water animals. I love looking at the different kinds of fish there are in the deep blue sea.I love the different colors, shapes, and sizes. It would be interesting to study what makes a certain fish blue or yellow or to study how they live and what they eat.

  10. If I were a field biologist, I would study the marine biome simply because fish and aquatic species and environments appeal to me. I think it would be a blast to be able to surround yourself with various types of interesting species in the ocean. For instance, coral reefs, algae, a vast amount of fish, crabs and a diversity of them interacting with one another in the water. I think it would be interesting to explore aquatic species beyond what's in a fish tank.

  11. If i were a field biologist i think i would like to syudy the rain forests. With the many different animal species and the tropical environmeent i think it would be very cool, interesting, and fun. It seems like it would be amazing and exciting and if you ever wanted a vacation you would not need yo go far.

  12. If I were a field biologist, the biome that I would study is the rainforest biome. I would study that biome because I reaaly like how the animals interact with each other in the forest when it is and isn't raining.

  13. I'm in the same boat as Stephen, i think that the rainforest biome would be most appealing to me as well if i were a field biologist. The reason for this is due to the fact that there are so many different and interesting animals living in the rainforest and it's amazing to see how they interact with each other, also the food chain must be really cool to look at in the rainforest.

  14. If I were to work in science department I would like to be a field biologist because I would get the hands on experience. I would love to work on the outdoors, such as in a rain forest, tundra, desert, national parks, geysers, and etc. Science is the foundation of life.

  15. If i were a field biologist i think i would want to work in a tundra or a prairie because these biomes have interesting species. In a prairie it isn't dry, it is a beautiful grassland somewhat that attracts me to investigate all the types of species that could be roaming around. A tundra has colder temperatures which i like very much and would not mind to work with. The animals must be amazing because they can survive at such cold temperatures.

  16. If I were a field biologist I think I would study the marine biome because all the animals that live in this habitat interest me. Since I have never been able to swim i think that it is amazing how all of these animals are able to do this because they live in that type of environment and must be able to do this or they will not survive. It also interests me because it's not just trails and feces it's more aquatic and more interesting.
